Most important for me are the transcoding options and ability to customize how my music is displayed in the control point software. However, if you look more into Minimserver it has more options that you may or may not find useful. You are right in that their basic operation is the same. Music Station and Minimserver are music servers. I also have a QNAP NAS with Minimserver running on it. Is there a better control app than PlugPlayer? I've tried a few, but I don't find any of the ones I've tried too good. It does not impact the music being played, but a bit annoying while watching it.ĥ.

Under media servers, it shows my ipad, my nas shows twice, but one is "greyed out" and minimserver appears. When I select the gear in the PlugPlayer menu, it shows my exaSound and a couple of other renders. I'm using PlugPlayer as my controller on an ipad. Also connected to the switch is my router (Apple Time Machine) and my exaSound PlayPoint. The NAS is connected to a gigabit switch.

This can be done using using MinimWatch on the PC (you right click the icon and select restart), or by the command line via SSH and PuTTY (that's how I do it from my iPad).First some background before my questions: I have minimserver installed on a QNAP NAS. NB A MimimServer restart is how you get it to scan for new music. For music only users, MinimServer has many advantages over Twonky including the ability to add any tag you wish, the ability to use locally saved playlists on control points (Twonky doesn't maintain the links after a database rebuild, so they all get jumbled up), better disk hibernation characteristics and a far more intelligent menu structure (far better ways to get to the music you wish to play).
Incidentally, have you considered just leaving your NAS switched on all the time? It is a very low power model and thus that would seem to be a pretty good solution.

When I ran Twonky 5.1 on a ReadyNAS and a D-Link DNS-323, it took over 1 hour to refresh the Twonky index at boot (and that was for under 30,000 FLAC files) whereas something like a TS-219+P will likely take something more like 3 or 4 minutes (I must install Twonky on my TS-219P+ and time it). If you have a lot of media, it might be time to consider a faster unit. All the above said, your NAS is quite elderly and thus I'm not sure how well JRE and MinimServer will perform (I have recently installed it on a friend's TS-212 and it worked fine on that one). Once it's been installed and enabled, you can install the MinimServer QPKG then install MinimWatch on a PC to configure MinimServer on the Qnap (to change paths to the media - default is Multimedia - and optionally, to set any custom menu items, etc).

It does need JRE to be installed first, and that's the only tricky part as you first have to create an account with Oracle before they'll permit you do download the ARM version of it. Hi If it's just for audio files, MinimServer is very good (that's what I now use for my >40,000 FLAC files).
